Overview

Juru Curry Fish Head, tucked away in a humble kopitiam on Jalan Juru, Bukit Mertajam, offers a culinary experience that feels both honest and memorable. This unassuming hawker stall specializes in curry fish head—a dish that carries the soul of Penang’s rich culinary heritage. The star here is undoubtedly the aromatic curry fish head, often paired with prawns and squids for added depth and variety, creating layers of seafood flavor that linger long after the meal.

The setting reflects a classic local coffee shop vibe: simple, no-frills, with only fan ventilation, which can get warm during peak hours. This rustic ambiance complements the bold, unapologetic flavors on your plate, making the experience authentic rather than polished—the kind of place where locals return time and again for that perfect bowl of spice-laden seafood curry.

The curry at Juru Curry Fish Head is rich and vibrant, with a lush blend of spices that hits the palate boldly yet harmoniously. The fish head itself is tender and cooked just right, soaking up the curry’s intensity without losing its delicate freshness. The inclusion of prawns and squid adds a satisfying texture and elevates the dish beyond the typical serving, making it suitable for sharing among friends or family. Given the generous portions, a simple order with white rice is often enough to satisfy a hearty appetite.

Serving both the adventurous spice lover and those seeking an authentic taste of Penang’s culinary roots, Juru Curry Fish Head caters to a diverse audience—from locals familiar with kopitiam culture to visitors eager to explore regional flavors. Be mindful that the stall often closes early once the demand wanes, usually around midday, so arriving early is wise to secure your place.

The experience is anchored not just in the food but in the rhythm of a local morning meal spot – bustling, warm, and filled with an unmistakable sense of community. If your palate craves complex, well-executed curry seafood in a setting that feels like a shared local secret, Juru Curry Fish Head is a must-visit destination on Penang’s culinary map.

A popular stall located in a local kopitiam, serving flavorful curry fish and seafood dishes. The setting is simple—an old-school coffee shop with fan-only ventilation, so it can get quite hot, especially from morning to noon. The curry seafood is the highlight here—rich, aromatic, and full of flavor, though it was a bit spicy for my taste. We ordered just the curry seafood with white rice, and it was already very filling. Do note that the stall may close early, usually around 1–2pm, especially if there are no more customers. Worth a visit if you’re craving bold curry flavors in a classic local setting!

Juru Fish Head Curry is truly a hidden gem. It’s just a humble hawker stall, but the curry is on another level—I honestly keep thinking about it. Rich, bold flavours, perfectly cooked fish head, and the portion is great for sharing with friends. Simple setting, amazing taste. Definitely one of the best curry spots around.

Love the curry fish head. Went there 2nd time with my family. Need to book before hand and don't forget to inform them to add squids and prawns as these don't come with the standard dish.

Simply the best fish curry up North of Malaysia. Really fresh fish & sea prawns. Spiciness can be tailored. Very "drinkable" curry. Its so good. Worth the drive. A true hidden gem in Juru. Can get stuffy on a hot day but its worth the sweat. Keynote: its the second stall on the right hand side. Right after the mix rice stall.

The stall is a “mixed rice” stall and the curry fish head is not on display and you have to order from the helpers there as it is cooked to order. One of the best Curry Fish Head I’ve tasted. Unlike others cooked with curry powder, the curry fish head here is cooked with a homemade spice paste which makes the dish taste almost like Assam Pedas instead of curry fish head that we are used to. The squid is cooked to perfection and the prawns are big and fresh. Hard boil eggs is a nice touch as it went down a treat with the spice and flavorsome broth. The dish came up with RM84 for the 4 of us which is really good value considering how tasty and fresh the ingredients were. Will recommend to anyone who enjoy something spicy (a bit of sourness). A dish I would drive an hour for!
